Bromine is a chemical element with symbol Br and number 35. It is a red-brown, highly toxic liquid at room temperature, with a strong unpleasant odour. It readily gives off a brown gas and is an irritant to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. Bromine can be found primarily as soluble bromides such as magnesium bromide in seawater[1].

  1. Bubble chlorine gas through seawater to oxidize Br⁻, producing Br2 gas
  2. Use air or steam to blow Br₂ out and away from solution
  3. Absorb in a solution of iron or of sodium carbonate, or condense Br₂ directly through cooling.

Uses

Bromine is used as a water sanitiser, can be used in the production of fire retardants and in the production of dyes[2]. It has been used as an additive to leaded gasoline to stop lead deposition.

Production

Bromine can be extracted from seawater by displacement by chlorine in the presence of sulphuric acid. It should be stored in well-sealed glass or lead-lined containers.
