Steam Engine

A steam engine is a heat-powered engine that performs mechanical work by containing steam. Steam engines use the pressure of the steam to push a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. This forward motion can be converted with a crank and connecting rod into a rotational one. The term "steam engine" is most accurately used to refer to reciprocating engines as just described, but steam turbines are also called by that name occasionally.

Basic Engine Parts

The most simple form of a steam engine consists of (number) fundamental parts A heat source capable of boiling water, One fully enclosed, airtight boiler capable of withstanding heat and internal pressure, One cylinder; which an airtight, hollow chamber made of solid material, also capable of withstanding heat and internal pressure, One piston, made to fit the cylinder as precisely as will allow reciprocal motion, made of an airtight, solid material.
