Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. Zinc is a slightly brittle metal at room temperature and has a silvery-greyish appearance when oxidation is removed.
Uses
A major application of zinc is corrosion-resistant plating of iron (hot-dip galvanizing). Other applications for zinc are small non-structural castings, and alloys such as brass. Additionally, mixing zinc with hydrochloric acid produces hydrogen gas.
Voltaic Piles

A Voltaic Pile is a battery which produces a steady electric current by stacking alternating zinc and copper discs separated by brine-soaked cloth.
