Transformer
A transformer is an electrical component that is used to change the voltage and amperage of an alternating current, increasing one by decreasing the other.

They function by using a coil of insulated Copper wire, or in some applications, more resistive but cheaper Aluminum wires, to create an alternating electromagnetic field, which is channeled by a core made of Iron, into another, coil, this one being wound with a greater or lesser number of windings, with a thicker or thinner wire, allowing the coil to channel the magnetic field, resulting in the generation of a new alternating current with a different voltage and amperage.
The iron core typically made out insulated sheets of iron stacked together, to minimize loss of energy due to heat, and maximize the channeling of the magnetic field between the two coils.
If the two coils are different sizes, the voltage will be multiplied from the smaller one to the larger one. This can be used to make voltages required to melt things or make Plasma.
Transformer Equation
The transformer can be used to "step up" or "step down" voltage based on the number of coils on each side. This is done by varying the number of coils on each side.
For example, consider two coils labeled L and R placed next to each other to form a transformer. The ratio of turns between coils L and R is equal to the voltage ratio between those two coils.
