Knapping is a process of making tools from stones, such as flint, chert, obsidian, jasper or other conchoidal fracturing stones. It is used to make primitive stone tools, like knives or arrowheads from rocks. It is one of humanity's oldest technologies, first practised almost 3 million years ago.

Materials used

  • Toolstone, a conchoidal fracturing stone, namely flint, chert and obsidian
  • Hammerstone, a cobble of hard stone, such as sandstone or limestone
  • Handle, made from wood or antler for fine shaping the toolstone
