Hardtack, or ship's biscuit is a dense cracker made from flour, water and optionally salt. When stored in a conpletely dry space hardtack can last indefinetly, which makes it incredibly useful for long journeys or as emergency rations. Hardtack shares its nutritional value with the flour it was baked from. As the name suggests, hardtack is very hard so before eating you should smash it up with a hammer to form a sort of cereal or soak it in liquid (water, milk, tea, wine etc.)

Preparation

Hardtack is prepared from regular (not self-rising) flour and water in ratio of 2:1 respectively. After the dough is made, shape it into puck sized pieces and poke holes in them for ventilation during baking. Then, bake for 3 hours at 200°C, flipping them halfway through.
