Electrolysis is best performed using a liquid medium.
take two lengths of wire, attach one to the positive lead of your electrical source, and the other to the negative lead.
fill a container with a solution containing chemicals you wish to separate, and place the ends of the wires into it.
current will start passing through the fluid, separating the compounds into their base elements.
depending on the compound in question, those base elements may escape into the air, or start reacting with each other.
