Aluminum is a chemical element with the symbol Al and atomic number 13. Aluminium has a density lower than those of other common metals, at approximately one third that of steel. It has a great affinity towards oxygen, and forms a protective layer of oxide on the surface when exposed to air. Aluminium visually resembles silver, both in its color and in its great ability to reflect light. It is soft, non-magnetic and ductile. == Uses == The mass production of aluminium led to its extensive use in industry and everyday life. In World Wars I and II, aluminium was a crucial strategic resource for aviation, and it aftwards became the most produced non-ferrous metal, surpassing copper. Aluminum is currently widely consumed in transportation, engineering, construction, and packaging. Aluminum is a lightweight metal and forms an oxide layer that protects it from further corrosion. This makes it inert and suitable for things like saucepans. However, for load-bearing applications it is not suitable in pure form and should be alloyed with other metals, for example Copper in order to make a durable alloy. == Production == Aluminum cannot be refined from ore without the ability to melt and electrolyse Alumina, which is a very energy intensive process. It is much wiser to try obtain aluminum through recycling scrap. If you try doing this with cans, keep in mind the fumes produced are toxic and carcinogenic as cans are lined with plastic. This is much more viable as aluminum has a low melting point of 660 degrees celsius meaning it can be easily casted. ==Dependencies== *Aluminum **Scrap aluminum * Copper * Manganese * Nickel * Tin * Zinc ** Bronze == See also == * Gold * Lead * Mercury * Silver * Steel * Chemical elements </div> == References == Aluminum
