## Writing Systems

There are many types of writing systems, including alphabets, syllabaries, abjads, abugidas, and logographic systems.[1]

### Alphabets

An alphabet is the representation of phonemes through a set of letters.[2] The word itself derives from the first two Greek letters alpha and beta.

Many alphabets are used globally, including the Latin, Cyrillic, and Hangul alphabets.[3]

#### Abjads

Abjads are a type of alphabet where only consonants are written.[4] In Hebrew and Arabic, vowels are often fully omitted except in scripture and teaching materials.

Examples of abjads include Hebrew, Arabic, and Thaana.[5]
