Fur
Fur is a soft and dense growth of hair that occurs on most mammals. It is composed of oily guard hair, that prevents moisture from reaching the skin, and thick underfur, that acts like a layer of insulation in order to keep the animal warm. Fur has many uses for mammals: protection, waterproofing, regulating body temperature, camouflage and sensory purposes.
Use in Clothing
Fur is one of the oldest materials used in clothing and is thought to have been used for at least 120,000 years. Fur is usually worn in colder climates to benefit from it's waterproof and insulating qualities but it has also been worn as a symbol of wealth and status in history.
Processing Fur
The method used depends on the type of fur and purpose. Common chemicals include salt, acids, soda ash, sawdust and cornstarch.
The first step to process fur is skinning the carcass though this must be done while the carcass is frozen since temperature change can cause the hair to fall of. The carcass can also bleed if not frozen. After it has been skinned; it's fleshed, dried, salted, pickled and tanned.
