Carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) is a weak acid formed when carbon dioxide (CO₂) dissolves in water (H₂O). It plays a crucial role in natural processes such as the carbon cycle, ocean acidification, and respiration. While unstable in its pure form, it exists in equilibrium with dissolved CO₂ and bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) in aqueous solutions.

Uses

Carbonic acid's most immediate practical use lies in food preservation and preparation. Carbonated water inhibits bacterial growth while also serving as the foundation for homemade sodas and fermented drinks. The acid's mild properties make it invaluable for adjusting soil pH in small-scale agriculture, particularly for acid-loving crops like berries.

In medical applications, carbonic acid solutions can function as a basic antiseptic for wound cleaning when stronger disinfectants aren't available.
