It is made by heating a mixture of [[lime]] (calcium oxide) and [[coal]] (carbon) to upwards of 2200°C. This could be achieved by putting the mixture in a coal fire and pumping or blowing a lot of air inside which will increase the temperature of the coals significantly.

Calcium carbide (also known as calcium acetylide) is a chemical compound with the formula CaC2. It is a colorless or white powder, however it is grey/brow/black crystals if impure.

Production

It is made by heating a mixture of lime (calcium oxide) and coke (fuel) to upwards of 2200°C. Although this can be achieved at slightly lower temperatures, the carbon monoxide will not decompose or react with substances in the air, thus creating a hazard.
