Calcium carbide is a chemical compound with the formula CaC2. It is a colourless or white powder, however it is grey/brow/black cristals if impure.
Production
It is made by heating a mixture of lime (calcium oxide) and coal (carbon) to upwards of 2200°C. This could be achieved by putting the mixture in a coal fire and pumping or blowing a lot of air inside which will increase the temperature of the coals significantly.
CaO + 3 C → CaC2 + CO
Uses
Acetylene production trough the reaction with water.
