Berry picking

Gathering, also known as foraging, is the activity of collecting food from edible wild plants and fungi. (could also include small, easy to collect animals such as insects, crustaceans, etc.)

Safe and poisonous plants

When gathering food from wild plants, it is important to recognize which food is safe for consumption and which is poisonous. There are a few mnemonics that help to recognize which berries are edible:[1][2]

  • "White and yellow, kill a fellow."
  • "Purple and blue, good for you."
  • "Red could be good, could be dead."

Likewise, there are rhymes specifically about recognizing and avoiding poison ivy:[3]

  • "Leaves of three, let it be"
  • "Berries white, poisonous sight."

Common edible wild plants

  • Dandelions
  • Purslane
  • Cattails
  • Elderberry
  • Wood sorrel
  • Mulberry
  • Burdock
