An oven is a heated cavity primarily used in cooking, usually at lower temperatures than kilns or furnaces. Ovens can be made from mud, clay, bricks, metal, and other materials.
Crafting Instructions[edit | edit source]
Simple Earthen Oven[edit | edit source]
- Create a base for the oven with large flat stones, it needn't be one piece but larger surfaces and more thermal mass are preferable.
- Using mud or clay, make a complete circle on top of the base. No more than 6 inches (15 cm) tall and at least 6 inches thick.
- Add more layers on top of previously, letting partially dry if not structurally sound. Each layer should be just as thick, but with a smaller diameter. The cross section should resemble a parabola.
- When the full dome is complete, carve out a hole at the base, to access interior.
- Optionally, an entry section may be extended out.
Brick Oven[edit | edit source]
- Build a brick oven
To use[edit | edit source]
- Light a fire inside the oven, if the oven is new, keep it smaller for longer to dry out the oven. Too rapid of heating may cause cracking.
- When the fire has died down to mostly coals, either remove them or push them to one side or the back.
- Food may now be cooked inside, heat will continue to be supplied by embers, if applicable, as well as the thermal mass of the walls and base.
- Add small pieces of fuel at a time to control the temperature.
The door may or may not be blocked off
